Frequently asked questions - answered

Q: When does the Squadron meet?

A: The Squadron meets on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

Q: What time?

A: The first parade is at 19:30, so cadets normally arrive about 19:20. The final parade is at 21:30, so, depending on what notices and briefings are being given, the evening should end about 21:40.

Q: Where can I wait when I collect the cadet/s?

A: A good point. Because the Squadron meets within the confines of RAF Brampton we have to abide by the security arrangements in place for entry onto an RAF station. For those of you that have a car pass this will present no problem. For those that don't, we advise you to park by the guard room, that is turn left as you come onto the base. You then have two options.

It is possible to obtain a more permanent pass from the passes and permits office (entrance via the guardroom). Please note that this is only open during office hours excluding Wednesday. They will require prove that your son/daughter is a cadet so please contact us first if you wish to pursue this route. A number of cadets come from the same area so it's always worth considering car sharing. The staff are willing to ask, on your behalf, during the final parade. Last point. The guards are there for a reason, please be patient!

Q: How much does it cost?

A: After remaining static for over ten years, the subscription actually went up in September 1998! It is now

It is also now possible for parents to pay subscriptions by standing order, please ask the Adjutant for more information.

Err! Sorry payment in advance please! To ease administration these are normally collected on 1st October, 1st January, 1st April and the 1st July. So if you pay yearly that's less than £1 per week. Can't be bad!!

Q: What about extra cost?

A: Ok you got me there. We do have a number or weekend activities where we typically charge about £5. For day activities like map reading exercises, walks, visits etc. We do charge a nominal £1 per person which goes towards the fuel costs for the minibus. There are also UK Easter and Summer camps which can cost up to £40. But don't forget this covers food, transport and accommodation, so it still rates good value.

Q: I'm out of work (or a low wage earner) and can't afford these extra trips, can you help?

A: Nope, but I know a man that can! The Squadron has a welfare committee that can help with, or in some cases pay for, the cost of some camps, visits or subscriptions. Requests for help are treated in strict confidence. For further details contact the Squadron Chairman, Dick Jarvis or one of the officers.

Q: Is it right that the uniform is free?

A: Yes and No. The blue uniform is ONLY LOANED to the cadets. It is property of the crown and as such must be returned should the cadet wish to leave the unit. Failure to do so may result in civil proceedings taking place. Naturally, as the cadet grows, or as the uniform wears out, we will replace it.

Q: Why don't you supply footwear?

A: No idea other than we are not scaled for it hence can't supply it! The Squadron doesn't have a budget for it and the RAF will not supply it for nought, so we ask the cadets to supply their own footwear. Suitable shoes can be purchased from the RAF Clothing stores at RAF Brampton and RAF Wyton. If you need advise please contact the Squadron staff.

Q: Do you allow homework to be done during the parade night.

A: Always been a bit contentious this one. Until recently yes. But after a review with staff at this and other Squadrons, we are now of the mind that it is not a conducive environment for homework to be satisfactory carried out. We would rather that the cadet finishes his or her homework before coming to cadets. Even if this means that they arrive a bit later than normal
